Our History

Since day one, our mission has remained the same—serving Korean children is our top priority. Our journey has been shaped by the evolving needs of the children and youth we support, growing from a volunteer-led initiative into a thriving nonprofit.

Program Focus Areas

Founded in 2007, KKOOM has grown and adapted to better serve children and young adults in Korea’s social welfare system. Learn how our work has evolved over the years.

2004

In 2004, a group of Fulbright English Teachers volunteered at a children’s home near Gumi, South Korea. When they learned there were no funds to celebrate Christmas, they raised money to host a party and provide gifts for each child.

2007

As the Christmas tradition grew, so did volunteer support and donations. In 2007, the original group of volunteers officially founded KKOOM as a nonprofit to expand their efforts and reach more children’s homes.

Soon after, KKOOM began building a relationship with an additional children’s home in a nearby city to broaden its impact and support.

2011

In spring 2011, KKOOM’s Co-founder, Aimee Jachym, spoke about KKOOM on KBS World Radio, an interview that was aired in Korea and around the world.

A mentor of mine always reminded me that ‘sentiment without action is irrelevant.’ So, when I first started volunteering for a Korean children’s home… I didn’t linger long in my feelings of sadness for what the kids lacked vs. what I had. I looked for ways to turn my sentiments into action, and one thing led to another and eventually KKOOM was born.

2015

KKOOM establishes a new relationship with a children’s home in Daegu. The children’s home is unique because it only serves children with physical and cognitive challenges.

2018

In honor of KKOOM’s 10th Anniversary in 2018, we raised $3,000 to build the first-ever preschool playroom at a KKOOM-supported children’s home. Filled with toys and books, the space fosters imagination, supports early literacy, and provides a positive environment dedicated to learning and play.

2020

After serving on the Board of Directors and as Chief Administrator for four years, Grace Lee transitioned into KKOOM’s first Executive Director, leading efforts to expand our efforts and impact.

2021

Recognizing the challenges faced by young adults aging out of children’s homes, KKOOM launched its college scholarship program. This initiative provides financial support for students pursuing university degrees or vocational training.

2023

To celebrate 15 years of impact, KKOOM hosted its first-ever Gala in May 2023.

We also revived our U.S. Stay Program, offering young adults a chance to experience American culture, strengthen their English skills, and take part in life-changing opportunities.

2024

KKOOM received its largest grant to date, funding the GEM Program and expanding opportunities for girls in the social welfare system.
